Introduction

Dear Fissure Friends,

If you know me, or if you read these newsletters, you know that I'm a very optimistic and positive person. I don't like to focus on the negative but in the last 2 months members of the Fissure Family have lost 4 family members so I'm going to start off with the bad and finish by celebrating a remarkable woman and her career. My father, Tim Firnstahl's brother-in-law, Dave Kolling's brother-in-law, and my long-time friend and partner, Barbara Tilford all passed away recently. Barbara lost a courageous 3.5 year battle with ovarian cancer in late April and we all miss her very much.

I invite you to read a celebration of Barbara's work life with one excellent example of how she used techniques we teach at Fissure to build an extraordinary, accomplished and rewarding career.

Fissure has been working with University of the Minnesota and the Center for the Development of Technological Leadership (CDTL) for the last six years. We developed and continue to facilitate the project management class in the Masters in Software Engineering Program started by CDTL. We desired to expand our relationship with the University of Minneosta and CDTL to provide a program for managers, project managers and Project Management Professionals. We wanted a robust yet concise program that would equip participants to take the next step in their careers. A curriculum that featured the best of the CDTL's offerings in leadership and technology blended with Fissure's project management and leadership Simulation Powered Learning®. The program is called Summit Certification and it offers PDU's and CEU's, we think you will like what it has to offer. To learn more about Summit Certification check out the web site: http://www.summitcertification.com/.

As part of his series on Project Parenthood, Geof takes a close look at the word "why". Why would he write an article on "why", you'll have to read his article to find out why and how he relates it to his kids.

Our other article is from Brian Toren, our resident futurist. Brian's inspiration for his article came while sitting on a river bank and looking at the surrounding buttes. Brian argues the value of top down and bottom up views - sounds like project management to me.

Our upcoming public workshops are in the left hand panel - our computer simulation powered workshops are an effective and fun way to learn AND EARN PDUs. Make sure you also check out what's happening at Fissure (Fissure News).

Thanks for reading and have a great quarter,

Jesse Freese
